Ader, Bas Jan
1942 Winschoten (Holland),
missing since 1975.

venue: casa Ciriza

Fall II, Amsterdam, 1970
Broken Fall, (Geometric), 1971
Broken Fall, (Organic), 1971
Bas Jan Ader’s videos Fall and Broken Fall investigate his interest in subjectivity. In building a resonating relationship between the acting out of the fall and the real life moment of relinquishing control, Ader parodies the rational Cartesian method. His gestures and acts formulate a new relationship between a purposeful cause and an unforeseen effect. In subjecting his body to the forces of gravity – standing atop a roof and falling to the ground, grasping onto a limb of tree until he is unable to do so any longer, propping himself against a chair so that his weight drives its dislocation, driving his bicycle from the street into the canal – Ader consumes and erodes the myth of perfection traditionally attached to formalism.
