Victor Alimpiev and Sergey Vishnevsky’s video, The Deer (2002), is an enchanting venture into a Nabokovian world of beauty and self-preservation. Set in a Russian forest, The Deer records two distant lovers caught in some kind of nostalgic reverie. Juxtaposing sensuous embraces and repeated gestures of madness, The Deer translates a dreamy vision where a sense of imminent danger is coupled with a latent erotic tension. Shot in full iridescent colors and accompanied by Erik Satie’s music, the video is founded on a personal symbolism that transforms a moment of loss into a vivid sentimental journey where ecstasy and suffering seemingly collide.
