Augustijnen, Sven
1970 Brussels, lives in Brussels (Belgium)

venue: Koldo Mitxelena

Sven Augustijnen is intrigued by unexpected incursions into everyday life — those mishaps and detours, either dramatic or subtle in form, which interrupt the normal enchainment of cause and effect. The artist focuses on the temporal mutations and amorphous complexities that change the expected course of events. Johan (2002) and François (2003) are documentary video works that approach a slow process of degradation. Johan and François portray patients suffering from aphasia who are undergoing therapy, but, as in Augustijnen’s other films, they also enact metaphors of deeper, historical traumas. Aphasia affects the language centres of the brain with symptoms that include chronic memory loss and an inability to recollect memories or generate responses. Augustijnen’s work provides a central point of departure within Koldo Mitxelena for a grouping of works that proceed with the notions of the rupture as a temporal gap inscribed by the past, present and future.
