1976 Porto, lives in Lisbon (Portugal).

Carlos Bunga constructs precarious living spaces that contrast the geometric precision of modernist architecture with the improvised cacophony of shanty towns. The artist’s interest in the performativity of architecture informs the temporary cardboard structure he built within Rafael Moneo’s Kursaal that was then imploded through a series of strategic cuts. The remaining skin of the original edifice serves both as a marker of interior and an exterior. Although Bunga is informed by the anarchitectural methods of Gordon Matta-Clark, his strategies of deconstruction extend a critique of domesticity that integrates the logic of contingency, necessity, and immediacy of materials.
