Deller, Jeremy
1966 London, lives in London (UK).

venue: exteriors

       museo San Telmo

With a playful curiosity, Jeremy Deller infiltrates society with an almost anthropological approach in order to isolate and highlight rituals and practices. Within his performative works, Deller investigates how communities and individuals interact according to their respective systems of belief. Their enthusiasms are based on a common past that is reflected in representations and rites. The artist often remains absent from the events he conceives and organizes in order to allow more democratic and direct access to art. For Manifesta 5, Deller organized a parade on San Sebastian’s central boulevard on Friday, June 11th. As a specific cross-section of San Sebastian, the parade presents the city’s hidden social groups and associations. Deller offers this arbitrary day of celebration, harking back to no particular anniversary or event, as a way to challenge the use of public space.
