Faciu, Andrea
1977 Bucharest (Romania), studies in Munich (Germany).

venue: Koldo Mitxelena

In her video Le Luneux (2003), Andrea Faciu recites a song she remembers having heard on the street some ten years before. Originally, the words were sung by what the artist refers to as “a pious blind man requesting a god to gouge out the eyes of his own child in order to turn him into an aging blind person.” The song’s refrain tells the story of the original narrator’s life — including his thoughts, dreams, opinions, and social environment — in a way that creates an intriguing interplay between an exalted expression of freedom and the amplification of feelings of inadequacy due to his blindness. By re-enacting the song within a video format, Faciu focuses on framing her own performance as an expression fuelled by the immediacy of the acoustic, the visual portrayal of her mouth, and the strangeness of the song’s verses. What evolves is a kind of formless sculpture that overlays the active singing of the song with the constitutive power of the artist’s own memory.
