Manders, Mark
1968 Volkel, lives in Arnhem (Holland).

venue: museo San Telmo

Manders has built a private iconography of forms, sculptures and images that are constantly repeated and re-combined. His project at Museo San Telmo rearticulates an existing gallery into a living space where fabricated and illusionistic objects are consciously positioned to chart an imaginary voyage around a room. The project, reflecting both a sculptural process and a compression of thoughts, words and images, operates as an overall self-portrait. Many objects in the space are reduced to a degree that is slightly off realistic scale. The artist places a funnel within a shoe to redirect the light back out of the shoe. By stacking a wall of newspapers, he hides their contents and headlines. Through peepholes incorporated into sculpted furniture, rodent-like plastic forms and photographs of Chinese torture may be viewed. All these elements combine to convey notions of selfhood that are subject to constant reformulation and readjustment.
