Pennanen, Anu
1975 Kirkkonummi, lives in Helsinki (Finland)

venue: Kubo Kursaal

Anu Pennanen’s Monument to the Invisible (2003) and Windows (2003) comprise an overlapping dual projection of landscape studies of urban Helsinki visually informed by Nokia culture. Sites are explored beyond mere materiality to illustrate an environment where natural visions are inscribed within details of distinctly corporate architecture. Panoramic scans of monumental constructions of glass and cement are set against the walking stick of a blind woman who drifts among the ruins of a possible future past. Pennanen refers to her installation as a device to rescue the individual from the alienating forces of technology that transform construction sites into otherworldly terrains.
