Broodthaers, Marcel
1924 Brussels (Belgium), deceased 1976 Cologne (Germany).

venue: casa Ciriza

What is art? What is the role of the artist? What is the social function of the museum? Marcel Broodthaers, as a  pivotal figure in the history of 20th century art, explored these fundamental questions. In 1968, Broodthaers established the Museum of Modern Art, Department of Eagles as a "museum as a fiction" in order to redefine the borders of art and critique dominant modes of presentation at the time. The slide projection, Bateau- Tableau (1973), breaks down the iconography of the pictorial and symbolic and reflects Broodthaers’ interest to displace realistic representations. By projecting a slide of a traditional maritime painting of a ship, Broodthaers accentuates the basic elements of the art object to make visible and decode its materiality.
