Schatz, Silke
1967 Celle, lives in Cologne (Germany)

venue: Kubo Kursaal

Silke Schatz’s drawings quote buildings and places that have made an impact on the artist’s life. Schatz layers finely rendered architectural drawings one over the other to produce mental diagrams that illustrate the spaces between actual sites and the personal meanings attached to them. The large scale drawing, Today Kalea Foru, Hondarribia, 1985 (2004), and its corresponding models, recall Schatz’s memory of a civil guardia attack in the Basque seaside city of Hondarribia in 1985. Schatz’s installation resonates between her particular recollection of this specific place and the collective experience of a history and culture which is not her own.
