Yufit, Yevgeniy
1961 San Petersburg, lives in
San Petersburg (Russia)

venue: museo San Telmo

As a founding member of Necrorealism, a St. Petersburg art movement reknown during the 1990s, Yevgeniy Yufit exploits photography and film to investigate a purgatorial space where life and death overlap and primordial drives dominate. Killed by Lightning is a film that unfolds within the subconscious minds of a professor of anthropology, a woman who has suffered a psychic trauma following the death of her father, and a submarine captain during World War II. These memories, together with a haunting by phantoms of a prehistoric past, lead the protagonists to a new theory of human evolution. The film is both a demiurgic tale narrated as a detective story that develops at a crawling pace, and an ambitious exercise in imagination suggesting that the whole world can be re-invented.
